Nursing Links

To help me share more and make it easier for you to follow it all without drowning in updates, i’m trying out three Link Banks. Each of these three permanent WordPress Pages has a theme. This page offers nursing article links from the present day backwards. The other two pages list Mental Health and Art/Fun links.

I will regularly post with the links added that day to all three banks. so you can check them all out easily in one place without needing to wade through lots of individual posts.

I hope you find this format more user-friendly! I greatly appreciate any feedback on this idea, as I intend to tailor it over time, based on reader reactions.

If you have any links you’d like to have added, I heartily encourage you to offer them! I’ll happily list all links that seem a good fit, and credit you unless you tell me otherwise. Use me to advertise and publicize: I’d be pleased and flattered to help you out.

Diagnostic Testing 101.1: The Importance of Sensitivity, Specificity and Diagnostic Test Accuracy | Michael Langan, M.D. – We need to learn this stuff for two reasons. We’ll understand the meaning and limitations of all test results, greatly enhancing our professional wisdom, contributions and credibility. Second, patients badly need effective education. Too any people assume that more is always better. Much harm, expense, and suffering comes of this mistake. We can educate them effectively only to the extent that we know our stuff. Vaguely waving your hand and saying “Trust us” won’t get the job done.

How To Teach Doctors Empathy – Medicine in a nutshell.  Address empathy with a day-long course. Fixed! Wrong. Physicians with any bedside manner have it DESPITE their abusive, technocratic training, and no day session will fix that. Research suggests that people skills affect the odds of getting sued by patients more powerfully than incompetence does. Feel free to mention this point to any doc complaining about liability… Their response may well help you predict which ones will get sued.

HEALTH CARE WORKFORCE: How many boomers? How many Gen X? Percent of nurses and doctors by generation – Look at the future of nursing: it’s a demographic cliff. Schools need to do a far better job convincing nurses to teach: we turn away many thousands of qualified students every year for lack of professors.

Where the health care money is, in charts – A profit system increasingly relegates health care into a secondary role in its own industry. Regulators focus far more on the charts than the reality, the care: it’s far easier work for them to review checklists of forms filled out than it is to assess real work in progress. I’ve often wondered if it’s become almost possible to put together a Fictional Medical Records Department without any actual patient care, staff, or facilities, and get it certified as a hospital. Charts have always served multiple audiences, but these days we see efforts to edit them entirely for profit enhancement. How much outright fraud results?

What I Learned @ My Own Assertiveness in a Silly Improv Game: Death in One Minute – I do a fair amount of acting at work. Nothing dishonest: honestly I lack the talent, and I don’t favor deceit for ethical and [practical reasons. I simply play a given role when it seems useful, a persona that emphasizes some aspect of my personality. There’s a clown, a coach, a parent, a teacher, an authority figure, a tough guy… It all takes practice, and Improv training provides just that. It also helps people find and challenge assumptions holding them back. I’ve offered patients groups medication education for years, in a fully improv format: rather well received!
