Freedom Has a Severe Downside

“Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose…” – Janis Joplin

With patients, always encourage hope, whenever possible.

No hope means nothing left to lose, which means they can do ANYTHING… kill themselves, attack you for no reason, ANYTHING.

Bad times! Really bad.

Hope is good for everyone… keep it alive!

Trust me on this one: keep it alive!

  1. I love how you put this. I remember a psychiatrist who told a group therapy I was in “You are only as good as you are right now.” I was in a very deep low (and had not yet been diagnosed with BPD, just depression) and ran out of the room, locking myself in a bathroom stall crying non-stop for an hour. One of the group leaders tried to explain that he meant that in a positive way. Sorry, I just saw it as my life never getting better than it had always been.

Now, if I see someone in a bad depression I tell them that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and hope for a better day. I am telling this through my own experience so they usually take it to heart.
